Taking time off plays with your head

Taking time off truly plays with the head of a triathlete. Its pretty simple really we all feel like we are losing our edge, losing fitness, which in some cases may be true but it gets to the point of ridiculous how much we worry about it. Yes sometimes its hard to start over building your base, and yes it can be demoralizing when you think, hey I just did an Ironman less than 12 weeks ago and now its a labor to run 3 miles.

But ultimately its not that big a deal to have to take some time off. It lets pains heal up, lets you get back in touch with other people in your life as well as just letting you have a deeper appreciation of the work you put into your training. Burn out can be a pretty serious thing for athletes and you need to be careful not to get to that point. When you cant find a little fun in what you are doing I think its time to take a break. So for all those that have had to take some time off of training, keep your chin up, its only temporary and eventually you will be back in the saddle.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I just ran three miles this morning and it almost felt harder than running the marathon in the Ironman. Hopefully in a few weeks we will be up and running and feeling good again!
